Betty Bayo’s mum, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, has warned her late daughter’s widower, Hiram Gitau, also known as Tash, against assuming ownership of any of Bayo’s property or belongings, emphasising that she is the only legally recognised next of kin.

Speaking during a Facebook live with Shiru wa Oakland on the night of Saturday, December 6, 2025, Joyce laid out her position clearly, saying her only intent is to protect both her daughter’s estate and the welfare of her grandchildren.

She revealed that the burial permit for Betty had been issued under Tash’s name rather than hers, a move she described as incorrect and misleading.

“And regarding the father of the kids, who is Kanyari, I don’t have a problem with him; we are usually on good terms. However, I wonder why the burial permit was issued in Tash’s name and not mine. I want it changed to my name, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua,” she said.

Joyce insisted that all official documents, including the death certificate, should reflect her name as the legitimate next of kin.

She explained that she had provided her identification card during discussions with Tash, based on a prior agreement that post-burial matters would be jointly addressed.

“The reason I provided my ID was because we had an agreement that once the burial was over, we would return here and discuss matters. I want his name removed from the death certificate, as it is false for him to claim he is the next of kin. I am Betty’s legally recognised next of kin, and I have been involved with her since she started singing,” she shared.

Joyce questioned Tash’s suitability to continue residing in the family home with the children, asserting that the children should be moved to a safer environment under her guidance.

“I hope the authorities understand that Tash is not fit to stay with the kids in the house; it is not acceptable,” she said.

Betty’s property

On the matter of Betty’s property, Joyce provided detailed insight, noting that she was well-informed about the assets her daughter owned.

She pointed out that Betty would regularly update her on parcels of land and other investments and clarified the reports that had emerged after her daughter’s death, suggesting that she had requested to be buried only in Murang’a.

Joyce refuted these claims, explaining that she had sent her daughter to inform the burial committee that Betty had not made such a request, and that she should be buried on the land they purchased together.

“I also want to clarify that the reports that emerged after Betty’s death, claiming she had instructed to be buried only in Muranga, were false. She had not said that, and when those reports surfaced, I even told my daughter, the one I have asked to take care of Betty’s kids, to reject that story so Betty could be buried on the land we bought together,” she shared.

At the same time, she revealed that while it is possible Betty may have jointly owned parcels of land with Tash, she is not aware of any such arrangements and believes only close friends like Shiru Wa GP would know.

“Regarding Betty’s property and belongings, only people like Shiru Wa GP know everything, as she was Betty’s closest friend. But I am aware of some of Betty’s properties because she used to update me about them. As for whether Betty had jointly purchased parcels of land with Tash, I can only confirm that I know all of Betty’s properties,” she added.
